Workers at the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB) on
Tuesday, May 16, held elaborate party following the suspension of their
embattled Vice chancellor, Prof. Olusola Oyewole over corruption
charges.
The Federal Government last Thursday suspended the Prof Oyewole and his
counterpart at the Federal University of Technology Prof Adebiyi
Daramola in connection with their arraignment on criminal charges by the
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
According to Daily Trust, as at 11.00am
the open grounds available have been occupied by both the Non-Academic
union, the senior civil workers' arm of the university and the
association of technologists ready to throw the elaborate party
separately. The reception party was jointly organized by the Joint
Action Congress (JAC).
The workers who appeared in gorgeous attire described the exit of the VC
as "a big relief" to both students and staff, submitted that the
suspension was worth celebrating.
The chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities
(SSANU FUNAAB), Rotimi Fasuwon said Oyewole's exist "is end to tyranny
in FUNAAB. Honestly, we have every course to have this party.
We experienced a period of authoritarian leadership that has never been in the over 20years existence of this university."
Part of this symbolic activity going on at the venue is the frying of
'akara' which in Yoruba culture is done to celebrate the passage of a
dead one
